13. Polikarpov I-16
Soviet Union - 1933

The Polikarpov I-16 was a small, stubby fighter that was produced in vast numbers by the Soviet Union during the interwar period.  Advanced for the early 1930s, it was the first monoplane with retractable landing gear.  The I-16 saw service in the Spanish Civil War, against the Japanese in China and Manchuria, and then against the German onslaught that began in June 1941. Thousands were destroyed on the front lines during the first few days of Operation Barbarossa, but in the hands of a skilled pilot the I-16 could hold its own.  Depicted here is a Type 24R that is popularly associated with the famous Soviet ace Boris Safonov.  More build notes down at the bottom.

Recent research I found online (primarily on Massimo Tessitori's excellent Soviet aircraft website) indicates that this aircraft was the Type 24R model, equipped with rocket rails for ground attack missions.  So I added aftermarket rails from Brengun set #BRL48088.  I also tried to hollow out the kit's exhaust pipes but got so frustrated I ended up using aftermarket exhaust pipes from Moskit.  I added some rivets using a riveting wheel.  The paint I used was primarily from AK Real Colors, and I also used the kit's decals.
