4. Heinkel He 111

The primary medium bomber of the Luftwaffe during the early part of the war, the He 111 is widely associated with Germany’s "Blitz" bombing campaign against Great Britain from the summer of 1940 until the spring of 1941. Ubiquitous in every theater, the He 111 soldiered on long after it should have been replaced. Shown here is a bomber from Kampfgruppe 100, a group famous for pioneering night bomber tactics. This "three-master" carried "X-Gerat" radio equipment designed to improve bombing accuracy.
