5. Sopwith Camel

One of the greatest fighters of the First World War, the Sopwith Camel destroyed more enemy aircraft than any other Allied fighter during of the war. Along with the SPAD S.XIII and the S.E.5a, the Camel helped the Allies wrest air superiority from the German Air Force during the summer of 1917. The Camel was not easy to fly however, and a high number of training accidents and pilot fatalities marred its otherwise sterling reputation. The highest scoring Camel pilot of the war was Canadian William “Billy” Barker. Barker scored 50 kills during the war, 46 of them in Camel #B6313, depicted here. Barker ended the war as the most decorated soldier in Canadian military history,
