6. SPAD XIII
France - 1917

One of the most numerous and popular aircraft of World War 1, the SPAD XIII was flown by a who’s who list of Allied aces during the war.  Names like Guynemer, Fonck, Nungesser, and Rickenbacker found the French fighter to their liking and flew it with great success.  By the end of the war it was the one of the most widely used French fighters.  France’s greatest ace of World War I, Georges Guynemer, was the driving force behind the SPAD XIII.  He flew SPADs during the summer of 1917, and was flying S.504 when he disappeared in September of that year.
