7. Fokker Dr.I
Germany - 1917

One of the most famous fighters in the history of aviation, the Fokker Dr.I actually had a brief and troubled career.  The Dr.I debuted in early September 1917 and was soon the most maneuverable and quickest climbing fighter in the sky.  In late October however, two triplanes suffered catastrophic wing failures in midair, killing their pilots.  Pilots lost trust in the design, and with the pending introduction of the Fokker D.VII, production was ended in March 1918 with only 320 having been built.

Despite its star-crossed service record, the Dr. I will always be remembered as the mount of one of the greatest fighter pilots of all time - Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron.
