11. Petlyakov Pe-2
Soviet Union - 1939
The Pe-2 was the Soviet Air Force’s most widely used bomber during World War Two. It was used in the light bomber, dive bomber, long range fighter and reconnaissance roles, to name a few. Over 11,000 were built, making it the third most-produced twin engine combat aircraft behind the German Junkers Ju 88 and the British Wellington. One of the more famous Pe-2 pilots was General-Major Ivan Polbin, who pioneered many tactics with the aircraft during the war. He perished in action in this aircraft in February 1945 as Soviet forces battled their way into Germany.
